What happens here
A critical and highlighted step is the installation of helical pile foundations. These are steel shafts with spiral-shaped 'flights' that act like screws, driven deep into the ground. A specialized hydraulic drive head, often mounted on an excavator (a CAT mini excavator with an auger attachment is visible), rotates and pushes the piles into the earth. Workers manually guide each pile to ensure it remains plumb and is positioned precisely according to engineering plans. The piles are driven until a predetermined torque resistance is achieved, which confirms they have reached adequate bearing capacity for the structure. These piles provide a stable, frost-proof foundation, as seen attached to the wooden support posts beneath the finished deck.
Goal: Install deep, stable helical pile foundations to support the deck and porch structure.
Tools and materials
- Excavator with Hydraulic Drive Head CAT — Driving the helical piles into the ground with controlled torque
- Helical Piles — Providing deep, stable foundation support for the structure
- Levels — Ensuring piles are driven perfectly plumb and at the correct elevation
- Torque Monitor — Measuring the resistance encountered by the piles to confirm bearing capacity
