What happens here

For furniture with an existing finish that is in good condition and not failing, begin by degreasing the entire surface to eliminate any oils, grime, or residues. After degreasing, use 220-grit or 320-grit sandpaper (or a suitable sanding pad) to lightly scuff the surface. This creates a micro-rough profile that enhances the adhesion of the new primer layer, without needing to remove the entire old finish.

Goal: Thoroughly degrease the furniture surface to remove all contaminants, then perform a light scuff sanding with fine-grit sandpaper to prepare it for subsequent coatings.
