First nice of spring means getting right in to some hardscaping for us!

What happens here

Following the initial rough spread, proceed to achieve a precise and uniform grade across the gravel base. This is accomplished by utilizing long leveling tools, commonly referred to as screeds. Workers strategically position guide rails, such as metal pipes or straight wooden 2x4s, along the edges of the area at the exact desired finished height. The screed is then pulled firmly along these rails, effectively scraping away any excess gravel and producing a perfectly flat and level surface. This meticulous process is repeated methodically across the entire designated area to prepare an optimal foundation for subsequent paver placement.

Goal: Create a precise, flat, and level gravel surface.

Tools and materials

  • Guide Rails — Establishing and maintaining the exact desired height for the screeding process
  • Screed — Precisely leveling the gravel surface by scraping away excess material
  • Spirit Level — Verifying the levelness and consistency of the screeded gravel surface across larger spans
