What happens here

Once all pavers are laid and initially adjusted, the entire driveway surface needs to be compacted using a vibratory plate compactor. This step achieves the final interlock of the pavers, locking them together and embedding them firmly into the bedding layer. After compaction, fine-grained joint sand (often polymeric sand) is spread over the surface and swept into all the paver joints. The surface is then wetted, which activates the polymers in the sand, causing it to harden and create a flexible, durable bond that helps prevent weed growth, insect infestation, and erosion of the joint material.

Goal: Lock pavers in place and fill joints for stability and longevity

Tools and materials

  • Broom — Sweeping joint sand into paver joints
  • Vibratory Plate Compactor — Final compaction of the paver surface to achieve interlock
  • Water Hose with Nozzle — Wetting the polymeric sand to activate it
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to stabilize the pavers and inhibit weed growth
