Efficient use of a hole

What happens here

Once the drain pipe is fully installed, connected, and verified for proper slope, carefully backfill the trench. It's often recommended to first cover the pipe with a layer of gravel or crushed stone for improved drainage around the pipe itself. Then, backfill with the excavated soil, or a more suitable fill material, compacting it in layers (lifts) of 6 to 12 inches. Compacting each layer helps prevent future settling of the ground above the pipe and restores the area to its original grade.

Goal: Restore the ground and secure the installed drain pipe.

Tools and materials

  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the backfilled layers of soil
  • Shovel — Moving soil and gravel for backfilling
  • Wheelbarrow — Transporting backfill material (soil, gravel) to the trench
  • Gravel or Crushed Stone — Bedding material around the pipe for enhanced drainage and protection
