What happens here
After the base layers are prepared, a thin bedding layer (typically a fine, open-graded aggregate or coarse sand) is spread evenly and screeded to the precise level. This is the surface upon which the permeable pavers, like the 'Eco Block' seen in the video, are carefully laid. The pavers are placed with consistent spacing, often interlocking to enhance stability. Once the pavers are laid across the entire area, edging restraints (such as plastic or concrete) are installed around the perimeter to hold them securely in place. Finally, the voids within the pavers are filled with a specialized growing medium, often a blend of sand and topsoil, designed to support grass growth while maintaining the system's permeability.
Goal: Lay the permeable pavers and fill their voids with a suitable growing medium.
Tools and materials
- Broom — Sweeping the growing medium into the paver voids thoroughly
- Plate Compactor — Lightly compacting the pavers and the infill material to settle them
- Rubber Mallet — Gently tapping and seating pavers into the bedding layer for a level surface
- Bedding Layer Aggregate — A thin, level layer for seating the pavers
- Edging Restraints — Securing the perimeter of the paver installation to prevent shifting
- Growing Medium — Filling the paver voids to provide a suitable environment for grass
- Permeable Pavers Eco Block — The primary surface material with voids for grass growth
