What happens here
This video demonstrates a quick and easy method for sharpening a chainsaw blade using a specialized Stihl 2-in-1 chainsaw sharpener. It covers identifying the parts of a chainsaw chain, proper tool usage, chain tensioning, and filing techniques to achieve a sharp and efficient cut, preventing the saw from 'walking' during use. While the user's request was for table saw blade sharpening, this video specifically details sharpening a chainsaw blade with a hand-held jig.

(10,469 characters)hey there folks this is josh stoney rich farmer welcome back to another awesome day here on the stoney ridge farm we are off the stoney ridge farm today and we're over at my buddy's shop and he has the ultimate steel chainsaw collection so in preparation for a future video that i'm going to do comparing the 500i fuel-injected beast to the 462 chainsaw we've got to sharpen the 462 chainsaw so today i'm going to show you a quick and easy way to sharpen your chainsaw with the coolest tool that's out there in my opinion now a lot of you guys are old school you want to use the file you want to do it by hand you kind of get that feel i understand that i also understand that when something like this tool comes out it simplifies your work and saves you time and that's what today is all about we're going to be showing you this chainsaw sharpener from steel we're going to be putting it to work on this 462 and we're going to show you how to sharpen your chainsaw appropriately so that your chainsaw doesn't walk through your log because if you sharpen it wrong and you get it all messed up and out of whack you're going to have problems this is the simplest and easiest way i've found to sharpen a chainsaw you don't have to pull the chain you don't have to do any of that so without further ado let's jump in here and get busy [Music] first of all let me thank my buddy john and my buddy tony for helping me out and letting me use their saws for these videos thanks guys thanks so much i've got a couple saws on my farm but i don't have quite this selection of chainsaws that these guys have so they've got everything from the ms-170 to this little guy the 193t little top handled saw to the 462 which is the saw we're going to be working on today and the saw you're going to see in a future video set this guy over here and the 391. now why would a guy need a 462 and a 391. don't ask me the 462 will eat that 391 up and spit it out the tailpipe now the saw we're going to be doing the next review and this is what this video is all in preparation for is the 500i steel awesome awesome saw we're going to see it put to work in a future video so let's go ahead and we're going to tell you exactly the steps that you need to do we're going to put that big boy saw the 462c on here now steel makes these chainsaw sharpeners for various sized chainsaws so odds are you'll have one for your saw i will post links in the video description for you guys so you can pick up one of these chainsaw sharpeners what an awesome christmas gift idea once you got it figured out once you watch this video you'll have it figured out but once you get it figured out you'll never have trouble sharpening your chainsaw again awesome let's get busy i think we first need to start with defining the parts of a chainsaw chain this part is called the cutter right here okay the top of the cutter is called the top plate this little part right here is called the depth gauge and we'll be filing the depth gauge down with this tool this is called the heel that is called the toe this is a drive link okay the drive links drive link drive link just like that these are riveted together that's a rivet right there and these are called tie straps these straps that go in between that don't have cutters on there so now you know and this is also called the gullet and that's where our file will run is in the gullet of each one of these teeth so let's define the tools that you're going to need to get this job done first tool is going to be this steel chainsaw sharpener i'll explain exactly how it all works here in just a second next tool you're going to need is a scrinch basically a screwdriver and a wrench this is a scrench that comes with the chainsaw now if you've got a pro saw like this you probably will have a scrench with a torx on the end just like this this is a screwdriver so i don't know if you call this a trench torx i don't know guys let me know um so we're gonna also need a nice vise this is a nice wilton vise from northern tool we're gonna go ahead and put our saw in the vise next thing you see this this needs to be tightened up before we start sharpening okay because if it doesn't we run a risk of messing up when we sharpen so we want to snug it down basically we're going to loosen up two bolts on this side and snug it down i'll show you how that's done we're going to take our scrunch we're going to loosen these two nuts these nuts have keepers in them the keepers basically keep you from losing the nuts that hold this case cover on right here okay so we'll loosen that oh oh over tightened over tighten gorilla don't over tighten those you can strip them out that was way over tightened had a chainsaw mechanic tell me one time best thing to do with this is cut the end off so you don't over tighten just like those were over tight and they were way too tight don't need to be that tight now we're going to take this end of our scrinch and we're going to check our saw real quick i'll show you we're going to check this and we're going to tighten down there it is that's it you still want a little bit of play but you don't want it super tight i'll over tighten it you don't want it so tight that it doesn't come off you want it just a little bit of play right there okay and you'll fine tune that and you'll figure it out because when you start the saw up and it's like that it's over tightened you'll hear it when you hear the chain whine a little bit now again we'll take our scrinch and we'll snug this guy down just hand tight guys you don't have to gorilla tighten it okay i'm bad about doing that but i learned a lesson because i stripped these out on one of my ms-170s one time so now we're ready to start sharpening so we defined all the parts of the chain on the chainsaw now let me show you exactly how this critter works so these guides they're just metal guides and they will ride right on top of the teeth of the chainsaw these round files will go inside the gullet of your chain okay so those round ones there's one round one there and then there's one round one here the flat portion right here and this only cuts one direction you see that arrow you only want to cut one direction just like this okay and i'll show you in just a second that will take down your what we call rakers or your depth gauge okay the more you take your depth gauge down the more aggressive the cut of your chain you don't want to overdo it if you've got a really small uh chainsaw and you also don't want to overdo it because you run the risk a higher risk of kickback okay and that's when you're running your chainsaw and it kicks back just like that and that can hit you in the face and cause some serious damage so time to slip on safety glasses just so we don't get any metal shards in our eye because there's no use in taking an unnecessary trip to the hospital to get that fixed again you can see there's an arrow right here and i marked the arrow right here with a sharpie so you guys can see it so we're only going to cut in that direction you will press down gently as we cut forward and then let up drag it back and you don't want to press backwards you can't you don't file like that because you will collapse all these little i guess flutes on your file you will collapse them so you don't want to do that by dragging your file backwards i see so many people doing that drag it backwards and you just ruin your files what you do so here's the tooth that we marked we want to methodically do this okay we're going to go ahead and we're going to lay our tool right on here with the arrow facing that way and you're going to make sure that this round part of this file goes into that tooth some teeth face this way and other teeth face that way so we'll have to turn the saw around because teeth face this way and teeth face that way should be an equal number of teeth facing each way you can see this rides right on top of that deck that we talked about earlier and we want the angle to be perfect okay so this matches the angle with the saw and you can see there are also little notches in here to keep you straight on your angle so all we're going to do we're going to give it three swipes one two three okay we're gonna check it we're actually gonna give it four on this one five there we go okay now we'll rotate to the next one just like so we can lock our chain break if we want to we want to give it a lot of pressure and we'll go ahead and cut [Applause] see how i take that all the way out whenever i remove this so that i'm not accidentally back dragging i don't want to back drag it'll ruin this tool okay move on to the next one i've messed up and sharpened my chainsaw the wrong way with a regular file like this and when you're doing a regular file like this you can get a great edge on it however if you mess up your angle of attack then your saw when it cuts down into the tree it will walk left or right so that's what this is all about i'm going to hammer down here get busy because i got work to do [Music] now we're back to our red dot and we'll turn the saw all the way around [Music] find that red dot right there again that red tooth that i painted and we'll go ahead and start on this next tooth and work our way around again this arrow faces that direction it tells you the exact angle of approach that you need to do keep it even and level don't do that or do that you can see the lines match up that's it that is a 24 inch bar sharpened in literally six minutes guys six minutes so we'll put our scabbard on toss this guy in the back of the truck and we're about ready to do our chainsaw comparison so guys thanks a lot for joining me here on the stoney ridge farm channel i really appreciate you this is not a gimmick this is not a trick this is something that's super awesome my dad is getting two of these for christmas this year what an awesome gift to give they're around 40 to 49 bucks depending on where you get them or the time of year again i'll post a link down the video description it's not a gimmick it works it really really works and it takes all of the thought out of and the precision out of sharpening your chainsaw so get busy get out there get to work have some fun guys we'll see you next time on the stoney ridge farm channel please pound that like button jump in subscribe to the channel i'd love to have you back we're going to get busy with the pro saws all right [Music] that's the way it's supposed to
