Plant and Backfill

What happens here
Once the planting hole is dug and the surrounding soil is loosened into a fine, aerated consistency, carefully remove the plant from its nursery pot. Gently place the plant into the prepared hole, ensuring its root ball is positioned at the correct depth, typically level with the surrounding ground. Use the soft, aerated soil that was excavated by the auger to backfill around the plant's root ball. Lightly compact the soil around the base of the plant with your hands or a small hand trowel to remove large air pockets, ensuring good contact between the roots and the soil. This loose, clump-free soil is crucial for healthy root development, as hard soil clumps can hinder root expansion and nutrient uptake, leading to poor plant growth.
Goal: Securely plant the new plant in the prepared hole, ensuring optimal conditions for root growth.
Tools and materials
- Green Bucket Menards — To temporarily hold excess soil or for water
- Small Hand Trowel — For finer adjustments and packing soil around the root ball
- Potted Plant — The plant to be installed in the garden
- Softened Soil N/A — The finely broken-up soil from the auger digging, used for backfilling around the root ball
