What happens here

To finish the white oak shelves, the creator uses a water-based wipe-on polyurethane, specifically highlighting that a water-based finish is chosen to prevent the wood from 'ambering' or yellowing, which oil-based finishes can cause. He demonstrates pouring the poly directly onto the wood and wiping it evenly with a rag, ensuring a wet coat that will harden effectively. He recommends applying at least two coats for sufficient protection and a desirable look.

Goal: A water-based wipe-on polyurethane finish is applied to the wooden shelves to avoid ambering the white oak, ensuring several light coats are used for durability and appearance.
