What happens here
This video documents a project focused on helping Jim, an auto wrecker owner, upgrade his heavy equipment to improve his junkyard's operational efficiency. The process involves assessing Jim's current setup and challenges, then selecting and testing three different types of heavy machinery – a Bobcat 753 skid steer, a CAT 966c wheel loader, and a CAT TL642c telehandler – in his muddy, cluttered yard to determine the best fit for his car-crushing and material handling needs within a specific budget.

(15,907 characters)Y'all ready to turn it up tonight? [music] Well, do you know where the makeup would be? [music] You need a vat to cover that thing up. Like a paint roller. [music] See, Tim gets his covered up. I get my bald spot. Can you actually paint a little hair on right up there? [music] All right, we got to go do some work now, Tim. All right, guys. I want to share something with you. I was asked by a network to come up with a television show for them based around heavy equipment. And I want to actually share with you guys and see what you guys think of this idea. Now, the network didn't end up buying it, so you're never going to see this, but I want to hear from you guys. If this did ever go to air, would you have watched it? It would be kind of cool to find out from you guys what you think of this. Um, my whole overall concept with this thing was for every episode that we built, I wanted to actually create a behindthescenes YouTube video telling actually what happened during the process. And so today, after the end of this video, I'm going to actually share with you a couple stories that the production company didn't know about and the network certainly didn't know about, but it was still actually pretty fun. guys, watch this and tell me what you think of this. Let's get into this thing. One last thing, guys. If you actually do have a concept for a TV show, I'd love to hear from you guys because I actually do get asked this once in a while if I have any ideas. And now, let's get into it. [music] America's got jobs. Look at that thing. It's a beast. Big jobs, small jobs, and everything [music] in between. But to do those jobs means you need the right tool at the right time. [music] That's where I come in. My name is Stan Genetic. I buy, find, [music] drive everything. If it's got tires or tracks, a bucket, boom, or a blade, I'm your guy. And this is [music] man meets machine. Jim. Hey, Sam. Hey. How you doing? Jim called me in because he's got a forklift that he can't use anymore. And in Jim's world, that's saying a lot cuz this thing looked like it should have been retired back in the 1980s. Jim is really driven by what he's always done his entire life. How long have you been in business? Oh, over 50 years. Really? Yeah. I started when I was 20. Okay. Yeah. You mean just looking around it and it looks like this place is awesome, man. Look at Well, it's old like me. What is this? The Whiz Register, right? So, you telling me this is like a cash register? No, it's just a receipt machine. It's got to be way over 100. We still use it though. I love it. So, what's going on? Well, the main loader we use every every day has electrolysis in one of the cylinder liners. So, we're pouring water in the oil. Otherwise, we're perfect. [laughter] 50% of our income is from crushed cars. Okay. So, we try to crush three loads a week. 18 cars per load. Okay. And that kind of keeps us above water. He's been crippling along over the last 20, 30 years with this forklift that's broken down. And it's time for a new piece of equipment. That's where we come into play. [music] You can't be down even for a day. Well, I shouldn't be, but I I already am. So, okay. That's why I called you. All right. So, you've got to move them. I've got to. Yeah. Be out a business. Wow. We're going to find you some new equipment. Doesn't have to be new. New equipment. Okay. What kind of a budget are we looking at with this? Uh, I'd like to stay under 20,000. Let's walk out there and see what we're getting into. Okay. Good. All right. [music] Jim's yard. It's kind of like the apocalypse. It is the scrappiest of scrap yards. The junkiest of junkyards. [music] The dirtiest salvage yard that I've ever been in. So, we need to get these down. Oh, yeah. Before they put me out of business. What are we looking at [music] for conditions that we have out here right now? It's taken him 30 minutes to pick up a car, bring it [music] over, drain it, prep it, get it ready, put it in the crusher, flatten [music] it out, stockpile it, and get it ready to go on a flatbed truck. So, he's been doing that with a forklift that's broken down. He's got to crush 18 cars every single day just to make ends meet. We need to have something that can go through the mud pretty well. This is like a maze back here, Jim. And I also see you've [music] got trucks, you got vans. So, we've we need something that can lift quite a bit, don't we? Our goal isn't to crush 18 cars in a day. I'd like him to be able to crush up to 24, 30 cars without even blinking an eye. All right, I'm off to the races. All right, good. [music] Tim and I are going to go out and we're going to try to find Jim the right piece of equipment. What about a big [music] giant version of this? You know, they sell bigger ones. I've got technical Tim. He is an equipment [music] diva. This is some higherend technology. He used the older stuff. This would just be too big for his space he's got out there. It's kind of like a wool in a china shop, right? Yeah. The reason I'm bringing Tim along is because we are [music] exact opposites when it comes to operating a job, how we operate equipment. I like to get in and get stuff done. Tim likes to get in, analyze it, think about it, and you [music] know what? It drives me freaking insane. But it works. Look at this thing. This is like the jaws of death. He could just open this up and just crush it right in half without even bringing it over [music] to the crusher. All right, so we got two 316. Quick tatch here. These are like a Swiss Army knife for these excavators. That's what's awesome about these. This is what we [music] want right here. Now we're talking. So, if he wants to get to those tough to reach places, [music] the telescope and boom on this thing would really make a difference. He's going to love that. Yeah, this is what I think we need. [music] We found three pieces of equipment and I'm really excited to take them over to Jim's and show them off. These are perfect for his sight. How you doing? Great. How are you? Good. Good to see you again. I've been out in the field hunting for you. Good. Good. I was wondering. I think I got you three good options. Oh, great. So, the first thing Tim found for Jim may not look like much. It's a Bobcat 753, but it's in his price range. It's as ugly as a mud duck, but it'll get the job done if you've got a skilled operator. [music] Now, the next piece of equipment I found is a Cat 966C. This comes in right at Jim's budget [music] around $20,000. So now where the Bobcat and the Payey loader are different is this thing can lift over 36,000 pounds. [music] Another option that we're bringing to the table is called a teleahandler. It's kind of like a [music] go-kart metaphoric lift and they got married. The tea handler has the power, it has the reach, but it also has the price that goes along with it. This is going to be just [music] a little bit out of Jim's budget, but if we can increase his productivity out on his site, it may be worth it to him. Right in here, guys. All right. We can't just talk about it. We've got to actually [music] put them to the test. And so, we're going to bring these three pieces of heavy equipment out to his site and we're [music] going to use them in the real world. So, we're going to be putting these to the test in speed, strength, and agility. [music] We're going to see which piece of heavy equipment can maneuver around, pick up a car, deliver it to the crusher, and get the job done the fastest. All right, Tim, fire it up. Look at that baby. Look at that thing. It's a beast. That's a Bobcat 753 that's got [music] solid rubber tires. You're not You're never going to get a flat out here. You're never going to have any problems with this thing. It's nimble. [music] It's quick. Definitely under budget for you. All right, Tim. Let's Let's go move a car. Let's show Jim what this thing can do. Are you serious? It's moving it. So, when we first seen [music] that Bobcat, I thought Jim's eyes were going to burn holes through my skull. I could tell he wasn't very happy right away. And it did struggle. I mean, when we [music] tried to move that car, it could barely pick it up. In fact, I had to hop on the back just to give it a little extra weight to keep it from flipping up. So, I got to tell you, Tim, your choice of bringing that Bobcat out there, you know what? I was actually pretty impressed with the way you were able to handle it. That's a fun, nimble machine. [music] Now, I couldn't imagine anybody else being able to do that. And the way you were able to spin that around and make it dance and it it was small and it was just the right size for you. It's not the size, it's how you use it, right? [music] I didn't even think that it would move a car as far as it did. I think it's a joke. I mean, if Jim [music] was running a smart car salvage yard, that may be the right choice for him, but forget it. It's not happening. That's enough of that one. Yeah. Well, next one will be better. It's got to be. Come on, Tim. Bring that one in. Check that out. Look at that, baby. The big beefy boy came in and we knew that it was going to be able to handle the situation. It's got giant tires and it actually can go faster in reverse than it can in forward. It has a top speed of around 26 mph and 170 [music] horsepower, which is just the right amount of power to pick up three cars at one time and move them around Jim's yard. That's more like it. Yeah. Yeah. Problem is, we didn't know if we were going to have enough room to use a piece of monster equipment like that in Jim's tight sight. We have plenty of room. Plenty of room. So, this payloader actually proved to be even more effective than I imagined. Not only could it pick up cars, but then you could move them into place and you could just use the front forks just to smash them down. Tim wasn't too comfortable with the controls of that big old payloader at first. You got two forks, use them. But then he kind of got the hang of the controls. And I think Jim actually [music] offered him a job before we left. He can tell a good operator when he sees one. I feel like I should. I just get away from him. I think he can tell a good brown noser when he sees one. I didn't brown nose. [music] What do you think? Good. Good. I mean, it can lift three cars at once. Yeah, it's safe. We're not done yet, though, Jim. This one is my personal favorite. Now, I'll be honest with you. It's just a titch over your butt. Look at that bad boy. Now, this is a cat tea handler. You've got downriggers in the front. You can literally put these down, lift the front end off the ground, stabilize it so you can reach up. [music] This boom will actually telescope out, allowing you to grab cars from way over the top [music] without even coming close to him. And you should have seen the look on Jim's face. You could [music] tell he was in love. It gets even better. Yeah. I want to show you exactly what this thing can do. You can do what's called the crab lock. Now watch both sets of tires. They're going to actually steer counterwise, allowing you to rotate 360° on a dime. If your operator gets a little uncomfortable, you can always just level himself out, right? If it's you can bring it right down and have him step right in. Actually, is better yet. You see that smart car over there? You think I can grab that from here? high. Then after I showed off that extended boom, I got down to business and this thing crushed it. I was able to pick up, move around. I had no problems finessing [music] that in and out between the cars, spinning it on a dime. This was what Jim needs at his sight. I think he's got the right balance there. Tim, how did you feel when I showed you up in the teleah handler? You saw the fanciest piece of equipment. You had to be in there. Is Tim's bottom lip quivering a little after seeing how a real operator works. What do you think of this? Would you ever see yourself using that tea handler feature every day? Yeah. Okay. This looks like an expensive mistake, though. [music] So, what do you think Jim's going to pick? I think he's probably going to go with the uh payloader. All right. My money's on the teleah handler. Want to make a bet on it? Sure. All right, done. I showed you three options. We've got [music] the skid loader. It's nimble, it's agile, it's compact, and it comes with built-in air conditioning because all the windows are already broke out of it. Perfect for gym sight. Or [music] that big, massive payloader. It's got giant tires, has enough power to pick up three cars at one time and move it wherever Jim wants to put them. Or that perfect teleahandler. It's got a fork that'll extend out over 40 ft. But the [music] best part about it is it'll actually crab walk and spin on a dime, but it also has the price that goes along with it. [music] All right, Jim. So, I just need to know from you. What's it going to be? A skid loader, a payloader, or the teleandler? Payloader. Payloader it is. Okay, deal is done. The PO is a good machine for this business cuz it's safe. It's heavy. It can lift over what [music] we need to lift. A good piece for this yard. It's available and it meets the budget. That's good. I think Jim made the right choice. Ultimately, [music] it was right for Jim and that's what matters. We got a happy customer. We're onward and upward. We know we're on to the next one. Now, you know what we should do? We should show them on Gold Rush how to really operate equipment. [laughter] That sounds like a good idea. All right. All right, guys. Well, now this was a blast. I got to go to California and work with Hoff Productions, but there was stuff that happened that not even Hoff Productions knew about. And I promised you some of that stuff. And if I was going to move forward with this whole concept, these are things you would see in my YouTube video. like the fact that while I was actually stacking the cars to do this um to do these outtakes, the ri roof ripped on one of the cars. And so while I've got it on the telet and I'm booming it up, the roof just tore through and the car came crashing down right on top of me. So I'm sitting in the tea handler with a car all the way wrapped around my lap and I kind of glance over to see if the camera crew had seen it. They didn't even notice it. So, I'm real quick trying to get the car off from the teleah handler before anybody sees because I knew these guys would just I mean they were so overprotective during this entire process and I knew that this would have flipped them out. In fact, I was actually shooting a YouTube video on this on this uh while I was making this show and um I was actually standing in the street just trying to get an a good angle to shoot the Jim's wrecking yard and they got so sick of me kind of wandering off back and forth that they put a a handler on me. Yeah. A monkey handler, right? No, this was a guy literally that his job was to follow me around and if I went somewhere or did something, he would gently tug on the back of my shirt and bring me back in to make sure I didn't get sideswiped by a semi or something. I don't know. Literally, I had a handler. That was just too funny. I mean, this entire experience was awesome. I love working with Hoff Productions and I would have loved to been able to bring you this TV show because ideally I wanted to bring you the behind the scenes on the YouTube channel and just kind of make it a a whole concept that I think would have been great. But now I want to hear from you guys. Do you like the show? Do you have a better idea for a show? Because sometimes I get asked, "Hey, what kind of shows would you like to make?" And I don't know. I mean, I just run heavy equipment. So, I'd love to hear from you guys. Let me know in the comments down below. God bless you guys. and go make your dreams come true.
