What happens here
An innovative technique is demonstrated for installing the capstones on the stone pillars. Instead of cutting the capstone around the post during the stone-laying process, the capstone is temporarily held aloft using small pieces of 2x4 wood. These 2x4s are attached (likely nailed or screwed) to the main wooden pergola post, creating a temporary shelf for the capstone to rest on above the partially built pillar. This allows the stone work to be completed without interference, and once ready, the capstone can simply be lowered into its final position on the finished stone pillar.
Goal: Temporarily support the capstone above the stone pillar to facilitate construction.
Tools and materials
- 2x4 Wood Pieces — Creating the temporary support brackets for the capstone
- Capstone — The top finishing piece of the stone pillar
- Hammer — Driving nails (implied)
- Nails — Attaching the 2x4 wood pieces to the post (implied)
- Pergola Post — The structural wooden support around which the pillar is built and which holds the temporary capstone support
