What happens here

The smooth, integrated appearance of the driveway shown in the video relies on proper compaction and joint stabilization. Once all pavers are laid and cut, the entire surface is compacted with a plate compactor, typically with a protective mat on its base to prevent marring. This vibrates the pavers into the bedding sand, creating a tightly interlocked surface. Afterward, polymeric sand is swept into the joints between the pavers. This specialized sand, when activated by water, hardens to lock the pavers in place, preventing weed growth and insect infestation, contributing to the pristine look of the finished driveway.

Goal: Compact the paver surface and fill joints with polymeric sand for stability.

Tools and materials

  • Garden Hose with Fine Spray Nozzle — Activating the polymeric sand
  • Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before watering
  • Plate Compactor with Protective Mat — Compacting the newly laid pavers to seat them firmly
  • Push Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and prevent weed growth
