Cattle Farming Lesson: What is Silvopasture? A "FOOD FOREST" for livestock?

What happens here

Using an ATV and a bale unroller (specifically a Greg Judy Bale Unroller is recommended), transport round hay bales into the desired grazing section. Remove the netting from the hay bale before unrolling. Drive the ATV slowly across the forest floor, allowing the bale unroller to distribute the hay in a continuous line. This process serves multiple purposes: it feeds the cattle, spreads grass seeds (which are present in the hay, including fescue, orchard grass, and timothy), and the weight and hooves of the cattle as they eat disturb the soil, stimulating the latent seed bed and promoting new growth. This low-pressure disturbance is critical for building topsoil and sequestering carbon. The cattle are then released into the area to feed on the distributed hay.

Goal: Provide feed to cattle, distribute seeds, and encourage soil disturbance for grass growth.

Tools and materials

  • ATV Honda — Used to pull the bale unroller and transport hay
  • Bale Unroller Greg Judy Bale Unroller — Specialized trailer attachment for ATVs to unroll round hay bales
  • Round Hay Bale — Provides feed for cattle and contains seeds (fescue, orchard grass, timothy, native grasses) for pasture regeneration
