🔴 Brush & Roll or Use an Airless Paint Sprayer?

are here tonight to talk about exterior should i spray brush or roll and the thing is is our channel is about educating equipping and empowering you but we want you to not just spoon feed you we want you to think about what you're doing and why because you should know why do i spray there's a reason there's a time and a place for everything and so that's what we want to talk about you know cuz we get a lot of comments like you know Chris puts up a little video for 30 seconds or a minute and people will say no back roll question mark because there's a time to back roll and there's a time not to back roll and so we shouldn't just make assumptions and if you're a painter if you're a DIY or a professional painter when you walk up to a project you should know what equipment is gonna equip you the best for the project to give you the most quality finish sometimes it's sprained sometimes it's not you know but we were thinking about the analogies of if somebody came to you and said I don't need a cell phone I have my landline or I don't need a computer I have encyclopedia we would think that's silly well some people talk about Russian and rowing and thinks praying is horrible that doesn't make any sense what do you think we want you to think tonight anger says you keep me from getting off track thanks Andrew for the super chat so to start it off Chris I received an email this week I wrote an estimate to a lady who wants us to possibly paint our house and she emailed me saying are you going to spray or brush and roll my question is people why is she asking us that why is she asking us that and is that a good question for our customer to ask yeah it's um this is you know this is what one of the things we want to get out of this whole situation or get out of this live show is to teach you guys you know um when you start a project start a job on every single house you need to ask yourself you know does this house need to be back rolled should I spray this house should I brush and roll this house what what method of painting should I use and they think what you know one of the things you know I just put out this I'll put out a 30-second little Instagram clip I put out a lot of stuff on Instagram these little clips of what we're doing and stuff and and people will fire back on this thing you're not back drilling you're not in you know all these little weird things and questioning what we're doing and they'll say it like in a negative tone in a negative manner like we're not doing a good job cuz we're not back rolling and or we're not doing a good job because we're not brushing and rolling it and you really need what you really need to do is ask yourself you know is it necessary to back roll in this situation is it okay to spray in this situation what is the best method to apply this paint how are you gonna get the best look how's it gonna look like a professional did it and then there's multiple ways you can do it you can brush it you can roll it you can spray it with an airless sprayer you can spray it with an HVLP sprayer you can spray and back roll it you can just roll and back roll it or you can you can back roll it before you spray you can back roller after you spray there's so many different methods and it's just really important that you just determine what is the proper way to apply the paint to make the pink last the longest and make your finished look the best and you know I just think a lot of people are missing that just that simple step of just evaluating the situation and in I think a lot of people don't understand - they'll watch our videos and people don't understand even from from region to region across the United States what you what we have here is a lot of this composite siding and it's kind of like it looks like wood but it's not what and it looks like it has grain but it's it's not grain it's kind of fake and it has like this paper layer over the top of it so it's smooth and so in those cases it's not necessary to back roll unless it has a lot of blistering on it and that's um de RN is saying that I'm always heard that spraying needs to be followed up by brushing in and that could be good and that could be very bad and we're gonna talk about that tonight because you know one method does not work for every substrate every surface um some things could be good and some things could be bad but we just want people to start thinking and not necessarily you know I think as humans we have critical spirits and we'll be like oh he's doing it wrong he's bad but take a step back and say maybe there's more than one way to do it and maybe there's a reason because if you just think there's what one way to do it then um you need to think yep I need to know so and I can see even some questions or some comments coming up here right here somebody made a comment rich made a comment if it's not HVLP it gets back rolled in and to me you know I I don't necessarily believe that that's true because if I was say if I was if it's on an HVLP if I'm spraying a metal door I mean we get all of the all the man doors on the houses we paint are metal doors are smooth metal doors and we spray them and it gives them a very nice look now if you go back over and back rule that saying it's going to stipple it and and it'll give it this just kind of oh I tell John I got a text I'm going talk for a second oh but just that whole thing of it's not HVLP it gets back world that's not always the case what we see there are surfaces like Chris was saying a metal door if you back roll it you're gonna mess up how the paint's been applied with the sprayer and so you do not want to back roll on metal what else vinyl vinyl siding is smooth do you want to back roll that no there so the whole the whole purpose of back rolling and we're starting to get off like just talking about backbone but we really want to talk about tonight is when you know when do we spray when we don't spray when we brush them all but back rolling just as the topic of back rolling back rolling is so you push the paint into the little pores crevices cracks and stuff so it gets down into their bites better and I'm so you don't have little hairline fractures and cracks or you know still moisture can get you know through the paint underneath the siding or into your substrate so back rolling like blistered siding back rolling rough stucco there's there's a point when you want to do that but vinyl siding there's absolutely no reason to back row vinyl siding because you're gonna throw out throwing this really nice good layer of paint using an airless sprayer and back there is no pores in crevices there's nothing in vinyl siding if it's in good condition - you know warrant back rolling now if the vinyl siding had a lot of chalkiness and you power wash it and clean it really well you might you might want to back roll it then but you got to consider what the back rolling is gonna do to your finish ultimately in the end we like all of our doors that come out with a nice glossy finish and that's why we don't brush or roll our doors or back roll them we spray them and then we leave them and they look awesome they're like they have this really nice you don't wanna be like finished so there's definitely a time for everything but I guess that's my question is you know why would a customer ask me are you how we're applying the paint have they been told by somebody that spraying is bad I know some people do market their companies saying I only brush and roll I don't use sprayers and to me does that make sense to you guys like I think it's like saying I have cyclopædia why do I have a computer I don't need a computer to me we want to be open-minded we want to try new products we want to try new tools you're showing that tool that you just found out about we want to try new things and get the best finish for our customers and for our projects and if it's trying new things and doing new things but somebody obviously is marketed this woman saying you know brush and rules the only way to go don't spray sprains bad and that's just silly yeah when I when I first started my career on painting you know I started with Darren when we were painting we back rolled everything because what we I learned from Darren and he just learned from the painters he painted with that you just back roll everything and that's kind of what you know it's just kind of like it's just passed down from generation to generation and then eventually when Darren started his own company I started my own or just stuck with being a painting I started asking myself why am i back rolling what is the point of doing this and I started looking at long what the finish looks like after it's been back rolled what it looks like if it's not back rolled and then started really thinking through it what is the whole purpose of battling cuz back rolling you could do you can make your finish look a lot worse you can even take the paint off as you back Bowl if your nap or your roller is not saturated with paint if it starts to get dry it's gonna start pulling the paint off so you're defeating the purpose but back rolling the whole purpose of back rolling is to you know get the paint to adhere better to get down in the pores and crevices to fill it all in and help it level out all out and then ultimately it's gonna make your finish last longer so um John's trying to get on what soon all right excellent so difficult so anyways I really want to read I'm not seeing the feed move so I don't have the mouse so I don't know people are talking but I think that is definitely something that we want to do we want to think it was good that Chris stopped and said you know what does this finish do I am I looking for and is back rolling getting me what I want and so that's what we want you guys to do when you go start a job think what is my goal and get all the tools so that you can meet your goal yeah so I've was thinking about because you know we're going to talk about spraying brushing and rolling and when to use different things and sprayers I mean how many different sprayers do you have oh my gosh well how many different ones are how many total how many right and we have HVLP sprayer x' we have so let me tell John you gotta tell me that before that so John's got the number okay so when we have HVLP sprayer x' we have handheld airless sprayer x' we have like kind of a hybrid handheld airless HVLP titan makes it's called a flex spray so Graco makes the handheld that we have we have your 40 all kinds of we got bigger espares little arrow spares we have the 440s the 395 the 1140 is the 795 is the 695 we're loaded when it comes to servers and I guess that's my thought is you know if I had a 5,000 square-foot house that I was gonna paint and I came out with a little handheld sprayer you would think I'm silly using that you would be like why are you using that it's gonna take you forever and so um I did see a winner and so that's the whole point is there is definitely a time in place we brush and roll every day but we spray also and spraying does not make quality bad and it doesn't you know - let's talk about the pros of spring yeah we'll talk about um you know so the winner we got it at the winner capstone capstone painting I'm something you know was the first one to guess a about you know airless spraying spraying versus brushing and rolling and we're good we'll stick with the outside exterior of houses and because it's a whole long subject I can talk you know for several hours you know on each one so we're just gonna stick with X tears because that's what we're still painting right now we're gonna be going on to the interiors here in just a couple weeks and then we're gonna be doing a show you know what you know when we spray when we brush and roll when we back row on interiors button on exterior we'll just start off by we'll just talk about the house that we painted today and and there's your things that you want to spray and there's um that you should spray and there's things that you know you don't need to spray you know could you just brush and roll a whole entire house that's what people used to do you know 23 years it doesn't necessarily make the best and you're not necessarily gonna get the best overall coverage either correct know when we're talking about like the mill thickness and yeah you know how for warranties and stuff like that so let's talk about the benefits of airless writers and and their there is a benefit and there is a reason why we have them there's a reason why Graco and titanor and even try Texas elsewhere is why they're so huge why there's frame because spread for one thing sprayers make you money and sprayers make it so you can paint extremely fast an airless sprayer you can get paint on the wall a lot faster than you can ever get it on the wall with a brush in a roller so you can spray fast you can put the coating on thicker and more even with an airless sprayer so that's not you have that stereotype of low and go that doesn't sound that sounds like bad but the sprayer is actually very good this the spirit just so you say the sprayer you know is it's a means to getting the paint on on a surface without having to dip and load a roller that's what it basically comes down to instead of it happened to just either a nine-inch roller or an 18 inch roller you rolling it and then put it on your wall or put it on your ceiling now you have the to just spray it on and you can decide whether you need to back roll it or not after you sprayed it on and you can get it on extremely fast and we've timed ourselves painting rooms with air nesters when I was you know doing new construction and an average sized bedroom that's like about twelve by twelve I can spray the whole entire room in less than five minutes and that's the closets the ceilings in all the walls that's how fast you can get the paint on now there's no way you can do that with you know a roller and I know some people will you know you know chime in and say why can load up just a pan and start rolling the walls faster than you can you load up your sprayer and get going with your sprayer and then clean up but once you've learned how to load those sprayers up I can load up a sprayer get that thing primed ready to go just as fast as you can break out the the tray the pan and put your roller and stuff together it's it's really the setup isn't is very minimal and and probably the finished product because the thing is is you'll never sacrifice the quality of your work yeah I think I mean speed there's there certain there's definitely certain times when the quality is gonna be way better with an airless sprayer than it is gonna be your brushing and rolling and for instance on interior trim you know I know there's a lot of good painters out there there's a lot of good painters that brush and brush and roll stuff and there's a lot of additives you can add to you know your paint but you know you can never achieve the quality of finish using…
