What happens here

This segment introduces the Makita Cordless Jackhammer (model HM1812) with integrated dust extraction. The presenter demonstrates the jackhammer breaking concrete with virtually no visible dust, highlighting its compliance with OSHA regulations for silica dust control. A vacuum hose directly connected to the tool continuously sucks up concrete debris as it's being broken. This is a critical safety feature, as OSHA fines for dust hazards can be substantial. Another tool, a Makita hammer drill, is shown drilling concrete while its vacuum attachment captures all dust directly at the source, preventing airborne particles.

Goal: Demonstrate Makita's dustless concrete breaking and drilling solutions for OSHA compliance

Tools and materials

  • Concrete Slab/Wall N/A — Testing the concrete breaking and drilling tools
  • Makita HEPA Vacuum — Providing powerful dust suction for the jackhammer and drill
  • Makita HM1812 Cordless Jackhammer Makita — Breaking concrete with integrated dust extraction

This is basically a dustless jackhammer. Battery powered. Look at this. I'm hammering into concrete and there's no dust. Actually, look really close and you'll see it sucking big chunks of concrete up into it as it's jackhammering through. The reason I want to point this out to you guys is because OSHA just increase their fines. The first time you get caught creating a hazardous dust situation, they can find you over $12,000. But then if you ever do it again, they can increase those fines up to over $124,000. Nothing like screwing the little guys. So instead of giving all your money away to the government because well heck you know they need it more than you and I need it. What Makita has done is they've invested a lot of time, energy, and effort into creating the best dustless systems without compromising performance. But I didn't want you to just take my word for it. So I thought I'd ask this complete stranger in a red shirt what he thought of it. So right here you can actually see the vacuum sucking up the concrete dust that if it went into the air and an ocean inspector ever seen it, it'd kind of be like uh money getting sucked right out of your pocket. Hey, what do you think of that? Pretty cool, is it? How's the vibration on it? Not bad at all. Yeah, pretty smooth. Yeah, that's pretty smooth. Yeah. And you don't feel it in your forearms? No.
