Been a minute since we worked with natural stone, but just wait until you see it come together!

What happens here

Continue striking the feather and wedge shims with the sledgehammer, gradually increasing the force as needed. You should observe cracks forming and widening along the line of the shims. Eventually, the rock will split into two or more pieces. Once split, carefully separate the new rock pieces, making sure they are stable and can be moved safely.

Goal: Successfully break the large rock into desired pieces.

Tools and materials

  • Feather and Wedge Shims — Facilitating the rock splitting
  • Gloves — Protecting hands during handling and from potential impacts
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from rock fragments
  • Sledgehammer — Delivering forceful blows to the shims to split the rock
