Beekeeping for dummies: A first look in the bee hive, what to look for... tips for success
What happens here
Approach the beehive gently and blow a few puffs of smoke into the hive entrance. Wait a few moments for the bees to react. The smoke will cause them to calm down and begin filling their honey stomachs, making them less likely to sting. After a minute or two, gently remove the hive top cover and blow more smoke into the top of the hive, focusing on the spaces between the frames. This further encourages the bees to retreat and allows for easier inspection.
Goal: Calm the bees before deeper hive inspection.
