What happens here

Begin by ensuring the geotextile fabric is properly installed along the excavated trench, acting as a barrier between the native soil and the backfill material. Using a mini excavator, carefully deposit layers of stone backfill, such as crushed gravel or clean stone, into the trench behind the stone retaining wall. Each layer should be approximately 6 to 8 inches deep. After placing a layer of stone, use a plate compactor to thoroughly compact the material. Make multiple passes with the compactor to achieve maximum density. This process of layering and compacting should be repeated until the desired backfill height is reached, ensuring continuous stability for the retaining wall.

Goal: Achieve a dense and stable stone backfill behind the retaining wall.

Tools and materials

  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from loud machinery noise
  • Mini Excavator Kubota — Depositing stone backfill into the trench behind the retaining wall
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting layers of stone backfill to achieve optimal density
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from flying debris during excavation and compaction
  • Stone Retaining Wall — The structure being backfilled
  • Work Boots — Providing foot protection and traction on uneven terrain
  • Geotextile Fabric — Separating backfill from native soil and preventing soil migration
  • Stone Backfill — Creating a stable and well-draining base behind the retaining wall
