Airless or Spray Cans? Professional Finish with a CAN!

this christy idaho painter here on paint live tv we're out here on this commercial job we're still working on doing prep work we've done some stucco repair some priming and stuff i've got a railing right here with a lot of chipping paint and i didn't have a great quality paint on it to begin with i'm going to be doing some sanding with my 3x4 sander prior to painting it so if you want to see how i go about dealing with this railing behind me stay tuned for this video so i'm just sanding i've got a little bit of just a little bit of rust on here i got a lot of chips i just want to smooth out the edges of these chips so you don't see them once we paint this this is a pretty small hand railing so i'm might i have the option of spraying it with an airless sprayer an hvop sprayer or just rolling it with a four inch roller like a weenie roller and i think probably the time to set up an hvlp sprayer would which is going to cause a lot less overspray um i could probably just roll this you know just as fast and not have to deal with all the cleanup and and possibilities overspray at a commercial site so i think i'm just going to roll it with some weenie rollers so [Music] gonna be doing this this is going downstairs to the basement of this business and i believe what's happening is they keep hitting the railing with boxes and stuff because this is where they store stuff so we want to put something on here that's extremely durable resistant to chipping and also resistant to rust so i'm just using an ekasan 3x4 sander makes it very fast and efficient sanding something like this versus just doing it by hand and i've got multiple different types of pads i've got foam pads right here like 10 ml different size foam pads that i can be using and the foam pads make it so it forms around your spindles a lot easier i do keep uh i just keep a bag right here my tool bag that has pads in it and i can try different pads if i want see which ones are going to work most effectively on the coating that i have on here now using the got an 80 grit pad right here on a pad saver i'm going to give this i want something a little more aggressive than what i got right now so far this little sand faster this one here works a lot faster here so what's working uh the ones i've tested now the one that's working the best is my pad saver right here that way i don't wear through mess up my pad so i've got a pad saver with 80 grit ekaselk ekka silk paper on here 3x4 paper and this is working just like i want it going pretty fast smoothing out these chips really well not a lot of rust so i don't have to worry about rust and like the last iron fence i did i couldn't get underneath the bottom here i can actually get under the bottom this is just cruising right along sanding there's not let's say once again there's not a lot of hard any rust at all so this i do got some bare metal so this might be a good option to use rust-oleum on this could use a rust-oleum oil-based product to brush and roll on which i don't mind since i'm brushing and rolling it and not spraying it these zekka silk pads are cutting through here this previous product pretty fast smoothing out these edges [Music] fairly quick this will be one of those things if you're trying to do it with sponges it would just take you forever not literally forever but it would take you quite a while probably three to four times longer once again if you don't do this step and sand all these nicks and dings it won't look nearly as good when you're done so now that i've know what i want to use i'm gonna probably only go through a few of these pads it's a short run so i'm just going to grab a couple more all right here we are we got our rod iron fence railing all completed uh the prep work all completed now we're gonna do the mask off and we're gonna get ready to spray this we're gonna be using a rust-oleum product it's a small project so i don't wanna load up an hvlp sprayer i'm just gonna use spray cans and rust-oleum has these high output tips and we'll be using a high-performance gloss enamel on this and this stuff is great for uh surfaces that you'll have rust on them you want to remove any rust we did any sanding but this product will go on bare metal and it'll go on pre-painted surfaces so this is a gloss black right here and we're gonna be just using spray cans i got like six spray cans to spray this with i'm gonna mask it off have my drop cloths out here for overspray and we're gonna get going painting this thing so here we go i'm going to be masking with nine inch paper around my post this can be using some frog tape and nine inch paper production tape i don't want to get any overspray on my concrete so i'm just going to mask this stuff off i'm going to want to tack it down so my masking doesn't blow up onto these uh rust-oleum cans this is a high-performance rust-oleum product that is good for high traffic areas so it's going to be extremely durable it bonds really well once again on a project like this instead of loading up an hvlp sprayer for a small project like this it's a lot easier just to use spray cans these spray cans the high output tips they'll give you a pretty nice finish the product covers really really well i just got cardboard shields down protecting my concrete going to put a drop cloth down on the other side here so i'm using this is that frogtape blue production tape right here if you have any areas that you're concerned about the product bleeding through this product is great for stopping paint bleed don't want any overspray to i'm going to be painting the stucco on this building so i don't i still don't want to get overspray on my stucco so i'm gonna when i get to that i'm gonna mask that off so like i said i'm not overly concerned about getting overspray on the stucco because i am painting this stucco this week but i am just going to throw some paper on there [Applause] all right i'm gonna drop a drop cloth down on the other side so one of the great things about these spray cans too is they're any angle spray can so you can spray upside down and sideways and stuff they're not going to actually suck air so i'm just cruising right along i'm getting pretty close to being done so just feel these spray cans you'll make it very convenient doing a job like this a lot of people would think the you know spray cans are for do-it-yourselfers but these are professional spray cans with a professional high high end industrial enamel and it's no different than the stuff i'd be spraying through my hvlp sprayer it's just in a spray can but this is the difference is how these spray cans my finger is getting exhausted from this project you just couldn't i mean i i couldn't do any more than this one small project with spray cans i'd have to break out the hvlp sprayer because my fingers are just so so tired um hurting from pushing this trigger but the coverage is absolutely amazing um it's not flashing even though i'm spraying you know in the sun and it's gonna spray upside down this is um once again a industrial enamel for high traffic areas it's the same i've done some videos doing hot rod iron fences using rust-oleum products and and a gallon and this is the exact same product as that it's just once again in a spray can and it just makes it so i don't have to set up an hvlp sprayer clean up an hvlp sprayer that's going to save me you know significant amount of time on a job like this and there's a lot less overspray with a spray can than there is with an hdlp sprayer also the atomization it's a lot smaller particles it's going to dry flash dry in the air a lot quicker so you can see how the coverage is just for a black on white is absolutely amazing another good thing about this product too is it's a quick dry product you know oil-based paints usually take a long time to dry but this product and these spray cans it's got a 15 minute dry time so that's you know extremely fast so especially if people are going to be you know touching the railing it's going to start getting used right away i'm going to put multiple coats on the top since that's the most used area just about done here just checking for touch-ups and then i'll begin pulling off my masking again you know i always teach wearing a mask i'm but i've obviously got to teach too at the same time i know there's some people concerned about my health but sacrificing it to be able to teach and educate you guys so there you have we got it's all sprayed got multiple coats on you can see i've used three and a half cans to do this project it looks pretty dang good i'm gonna start pulling off the masking now see how it looks [Music] so you can see how fast i did that with these spray cans that was extremely fast you can see why i really like using spray cans when i can and if i'm going to do something like this i'm always going to use some type of industrial product so cardboard shields you know make it simple to cover things up so you don't have to mask you know everything the cardboard shields are reusable you know multiple times over and over and over again i never throw them away really as they get heavier and heavier with paint i use them to put them in gutters and when i spray the gutters and the heavier they are the less likely they are to blow out of the gutters on a windy day so even though you know they're an expense they're you know about i don't know 50 cents a piece or something like that they really will last you i got cardboard shields that are years old all right there you have it we've got our railing all done now with our rust-oleum spray cans it only took me about an hour to mask it off and spray it if you got any questions or comments about the
