What happens here

The final framing step shown is the installation of the roof sheathing. Large sheets of structural plywood or OSB (Oriented Strand Board) are precisely cut to size using a circular saw, as depicted in the video. These cut sheets are then carefully lifted onto the installed roof rafters and securely fastened with a pneumatic nail gun. This process creates a solid, continuous surface that serves as the base for the subsequent roofing materials (like felt paper and shingles). Typically, sheathing is installed working from the bottom edge of the roof upwards, staggering seams between rows for enhanced structural integrity.

Goal: Create a solid surface over the rafters for roofing materials.

Tools and materials

  • Air Compressor — Powering the pneumatic nail gun
  • Chalk Line — Marking straight lines on sheathing to guide nailing over rafters
  • Circular Saw — Cutting plywood or OSB sheets to the required dimensions
  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from loud power tool noise
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring sheathing dimensions and marking cut lines
  • Pneumatic Nail Gun — Securing the roof sheathing to the rafters
  • Safety Glasses — Eye protection from sawdust and flying debris
  • Work Gloves — Hand protection and improved grip
  • Plywood or OSB Sheets — Creating the solid deck of the roof
  • Sheathing Nails — Securing the sheathing to the rafters
