This DIY guide explains how to effectively use the HandyScribe carpenter pencil, a specialized marking tool with a cam shape and offset core. This unique design allows it to scribe accurate parallel lines, and crucially, to mark irregular shapes or gaps for a perfect fit when installing trim or other materials against uneven walls or surfaces. The tool provides a versatile range of scribe offsets, making it a valuable addition to any DIYer's toolkit for achieving professional-looking results.

black carpenter pencil with a jumbo round, but we made a camshape and we offset the core. So it's not only a pencil now, it is a tool that you have behind you all the time. Now you just use your pencil and you rotate, and you can scribe any line from about an eighth inch to seven sixteenths and everything in between just by rotating your pencil. Your wall is out of square and you need to have a tight fit. You just take this pencil, instead of getting your gadgets, and you rotate it to your biggest gap, hold it flush against the wall, and you can scribe right into the corner and when you cut your piece, it will fit out. You have a range of about just under an eighth of an inch, up to about seven sixteenths. That's actually really cool. Every measurement in between just by rotating.
