What happens here
This DIY project demonstrates how to restore a free, used red toolbox with various damages to full functionality. The process involves identifying and repairing dents on the top lid, fixing problematic drawer slides by bending misplaced metal tabs, reassembling the drawers, and finally cleaning the entire unit. The project highlights the value of repurposing and repairing items to extend their lifespan.

(11,013 characters)Check out this free toolbox. I just scored. Happy 2021 to me. Hey, folks, that big sick guy here in 2021's been treat me good so far. I got a free toolbox. This is awesome, man. This thing came from a group that my wife belongs to on Facebook. It's called Buy Nothing. They're all over the country as far as I know. Maybe the world. But it's a community-based group and you give something and you get something, right? You send things out and you get some things back once in a while. It's pretty awesome. So she hooked me up with this. I think it was an awesome score, right? It's got a few dins. It's got a few dins. But it's new to me and I don't mind. Like anything, as soon as you see it, you have that gleam in your eye, right? You're like that shine. Like, oh my gosh. Then I get at home and I start messing with it. I'm about to show you. We got to make a couple of repairs. So come along. Let's get to fix it. Okay, so let's check this bad boy out. You can see big dent right here in the top of it, right? It's a pretty good little dent. And it's kind of made this go a little cock-eyed. It still locks. Like you can get it in there and you can make it lock. But I try to mess around with that. See if we can bend that out. Make it a little straight. If you come down to the drawers, you could see the shine of the new toolbox quickly. We were off. But I realized, oh, I have work to do. That went in. I actually couldn't even get this one open. Like this is actually good. And that one's in. And this one is half in and half off. And then this one barely opens without that one opening. So we got a little bit of something to give in there and mess with. You get down here to the bottom and the bottom drawers actually work pretty well. I'm not going to complain about those. And then this, you can tell there's some dent in it. Like it's a little bit bowed and bent. But it actually works pretty well. Closes. So we know it all and all. It's good, man. Like it's got some casters on it. It's got a little bit of a wallow. But you put some tools in there and it's not going to be bad. It actually still rolls around. Alright, so I'm going to show you how we're going to make a couple of these repairs, right? We're going to try to straighten out a couple of the dents. We will definitely try to fix the drawers. I don't mind if this thing is cheap. I just need the functionality of it. I need it to work. And so we'll get that hooked up. Everything is about construction. I gave it to once over already. It looks like it should be pretty easy to hook up. If you guys like the content, please consider subscribing to the channel. We really just enjoy helping people. And once so while we run into something great, awesome, find like this. And I just want to share with you, like, hey, just because something's broke doesn't mean that it can't be fixed, right? It's just as easy for somebody to chuck this as it was to give it away. And I'm really happy they gave it away. Okay. So the first thing we're going to try to get is we're actually just, I want to bend this straight. And I want to see if I can get this dent right here out a little bit. I'm just using a little crescent wrench for this right? Nothing too crazy. I just figured this is straight job. And maybe it would work out for us. What are you doing, dude? What are you doing coming in here messing with me? What are you doing with that? What are you doing with that, buddy? Look at that. When you put that, you put a tool in there already. Okay. Well, I guess it's coming out a little bit. I'm going to try to pound that flat. I can try to pound it flat, but you know what? I don't actually really mind a little bit of a dent. So let's just see if the functionality of this works a little bit better because it was kind of hard to lock up. So we'll just take this out of our way, grab some keys, just go ahead and just make sure it locks. And it seems like it locks a lot easier at this point. So it's good. On to the next. Okay. So for the purpose of taking the drawers out and fixing the drawers, I have been using this right here. This is a little t-square that came with my Ryobi circular saw. This little thing, it just comes in handy for what I'm using it for, right? I need to be able to get down in the side of this right here, the side of these drawers. And I need to push this little piece of divot metal. But what I think has happened here because this whole thing is metal construction, I think that between this right here being not popped out enough to actually keep the drawer from coming out. And if you look right up here, right there, you can actually see that this part of the piece that catches the slide for the drawer is actually popped up, right? You can see back here, this one is a little bit popped up, but this one's normal, this one's pretty much normal, and this one's popped up. So we're going to pop that back down please, pop that place, pop that out, and we'll check the other side and see what that looks like. Okay, let's see what we've got here. Oh yeah, there we go. Got down in there. Oh, that's flimsy. Okay, so I was afraid that might break, but it actually is holding there pretty good. Let's see about that back one. Yeah, that one's here. It's looking a lot better right there. And so now we're just going to try to get in here. I had to readjust the camera there. So if I can take this and I can get right back in here with these little six inch little cany pecs pliers, I can just pop that out a little bit. And that looks good. Let's see what the other side looks like. Okay, so this is the other side and you can see right here too, right? That same thing, it's just popped up and that is pushed in and those actually look pretty good. So I think it's just that one and it's, you could tell it's so flimsy. I'm actually pushing that down with my finger. And I think I pushed it in the right spot with my finger. Trust me, these aren't hercules fingers, all right? This is thin metal. See if I can get that out. Oh, man, no, that one I can't get out though. So just get back in there again with the cany pecs. These little things are awesome, man. They are just good for tight spaces. You can see how tight the space this is. It's awesome. Okay, so that should be good. When this slides through there, it should pop on this, it's probably going to bend in a little bit, but hopefully it keeps it out enough to where it's not going to move. You know, they say, one man's trash is no one man's treasure. I mean, I'm all about it, dude. I love garage sailing. I love finding things that that I can fix. You know, that and I don't want to freaking buy tons of stuff that's already out there. I buy a lot of stuff used, man. And let's just see if it pops in. So you can see what I'm talking about. Still, it's still all metal construction, right? These little slides, that's all it is, is metal sliding inside that. And this is the same thing. If you see right there, that is one of those tabs. And that's where it catches is right there. So hopefully that tab sticks out far enough. So hopefully that tab that we just pulled out back there sticks out far enough that it's going to catch on this. And it's not going to allow it to come back out anymore. Let's see. Here's the hoping. Okay. So we'll just try to get that put in place right there on that side. Get this side put in. So I can feel the resistance on this top one, right? Right where I'm at right there, I think is where those clips are. And I got both of them. You hear those two clicks. And that drawer just actually slides a lot different at this point. Awesome. So much more. I mean, it's not the stabeless thing ever anyway, but it's pretty good. I think it's going to be good. If I don't overload these, it's going to work out awesome. Lace, it's not falling off anymore. So then we'll just do this to the rest of them. Like this one actually is pretty good. This one needs to be repaired. So remember, I said I had to grab this little t-square off of my Ryobi and just I was looking for something flat and this worked out perfect because you have to get back here. A screwdriver doesn't actually do it. But you have to get back here and you have to depress that little tab so you can get this thing pulled the whole way out. And boom, it pops out. So everything right here looks really good. We just want to take that. I'm just going to take that tab and I'm just going to pop it out just a little bit again. And with this one right here, you know what, that's going to have to be baked down a little bit. Just get that in place. And that's popped down enough. A little screwdriver hooked that right up. And then we also want to do this tab. Okay, just a little bit right there. And we'll see about that drawer. So once again, everything looks good here. We'll check these out. That one's good to roll to. It's not coming out. So then we can just pop this back in place. You can go, you feel it like I'm not telling you the pressure. Just click, click there. And now suddenly we're good to rock and roll. We're back to where it needs to be. Logan fakes it in the house. You can see this drawer right here is a little bit wonky. Overall it works, huh? Hold on. And we're going to have to do this one too. Okay. So then we're just going to pop this bad boy in here once again to take that. There we go. The last thing we're looking at here is this. And it actually sets fine for me, right? You can see this thing has definitely got some dents, some bangs. I could take it and probably try to pound it out flat or something. But like I said, I don't mind the dents. Do you mind the dents, Logan? No. Okay. So Logan fix it. Do you want to show everybody how to put this rod in? Is that for security? Hold on. You got to, you got to move out of the way of the camera so you can show them. Do you, could you show them how to do it right there? It goes down in like that. Awesome. That's awesome, dude. And then you can open it. Cool. Cool. And now we will start cleaning this listening to the awesome sounds of my daughter going to bed. Because man, that's kid life. Okay. So I got this bed with fixed up. I got it cleaned up. I slapped a sticker on it. You guys should check out rootforhope.com. It's pretty cool. Just awesome people trying to help people out making the world a better place. I really hope you guys enjoyed the video. A little cameo by Logan fix it. We ended up rocking this out.
