What happens here
This project details the process of milling logs into lumber for log cabin accents, specifically for "butt and pass" corners. It covers everything from moving the portable sawmill and logs with heavy equipment to sharpening chainsaw blades, making precise cuts, and dealing with various log sizes and conditions. The project aims to create consistent-sized lumber for a log cabin, overcoming challenges like uneven log widths and efficient material handling.

(12,918 characters)good morning you guys well it's the start of a brand new day and we're gonna be doing some things that i'm not totally familiar with fact it'll be the first time i've ever done this in my life but there's going to be some old equipment back into the scene in fact today we're going to be also we're going to be working at a sawmill but we're also going to be running our old 300 bobcat so we're familiar with that so it's not going to be all brand new but there's gonna be enough new stuff that this should make it pretty interesting oh new straps perfect something to tie the wood down with let's go to the sawmill and let's see what hap what's happening today so matt started this sawmill about a year ago i think he's gonna be taking the plunge going full time matt how you doing buddy good to see you man thanks for helping out so this is the pile of wood that we get to see what we can make out of yeah this would be fun have you decided you're going full time yet uh i think it's a decision it's made it's just need to put some plans in action to get there he's like i said he started it last year so so this is it this is the this is the pile of wood and we're going to be taking this over to the sawmill so we're going to need i'm going to guess we're going to grab it carry it saw it i could probably do the moving with the because i'm more familiar with the skid loader than i am with your sawmill right i i want to keep my nose picker so i'll let you run the sharp thing [Laughter] it'll be interesting to see what we can make out of her this is what we're gonna try to make up in my cabin some of you guys know i call it shangri-la and the one i rocked across the lake shangri-la douche well we're not going full log on changrilla but we are gonna be utilizing some log accent pieces and this is what we're going to be attempting to build today but there's more to it than we initially thought in fact we kind of screw up the first few logs before we have our aha moment but i'm getting ahead of the story let's just see how this goes [Music] that's like an obstacle course i should have brought my track skid loader thankfully it's dried up so which so one of these is gonna be trailer oh my god look at that log you just reached over dude that's gorgeous god that's amazing i don't know what you'd use that for look at some of these gonna be your post right yeah these will be my post yeah i'll take one two three i need seven posts here's the obstacle course route we gotta take the 300 and with the sawmill where it's at we're gonna go through here we're gonna avoid all the chickens we're gonna go through here through the mud puddle we've got logs now these are 20 foot long logs and it's going to get skinny right here and i don't want to drag them in though on the ground that truck won't move so i'm wondering maybe we bring the sawmill right to here what if it's portable what if we brought the sawmill to the logs instead of the logs to the sawmill quick question matt what if we brought the sawmill to the logs instead of the logs to the sawmill would it be easier if we hooked it up to the skid loader trailered it right to here grabbed the logs rotated them on cut them and i brought them right over i parked the trailer right there and we threw them right on the trailer so we're boom boom boom boom that would be easier you want to try to do that yeah we can move it with the skid loader right okay each section gets three yep that's just kind of my method i don't know if that's the best but it seems to work pretty good how long have you been using that uh i've had this for about a year this sharpening i send them out most of the time but if i got a quick sharpen i need i'll just use this you know what that was matt what that tractor was i don't either i i i know hi boys i know a lot of tractors but i don't know what the heck that one did you need to see how fast i can tear this down here to move the trailer even a short distance mat has to get it ready to be road work procedure is all the same whether it's moved 40 feet across the lot or 400 miles down the road so once you get all the weight shifted to the front end she just hovers so now you got her right where she just kind of balances in between the two hmm and this is how you can go down the road at 60 miles an hour and not have a problem yeah i mean does she handle good going down the road matt or how does it handle it's actually not doesn't have enough tongue weight on it so uh i'll set the trailer as low as i can go on the truck but yeah it's still kind of all the way back oh why would they do that i don't know they just it just needs to be adjusted a little bit not perfect so matt's never actually moved this trailer just using a skid loader before trailers are a little bit more difficult than other pieces of equipment when you hook up to those chains instead of having a very firm connection you've got this kind of like swing set type of a thing going where it pulls then it slams pulls slams and the last thing i want to do is have that control box which is mounted right next to the hitch slam into the forks so i've got to be especially careful not to let it slam too much because this is kind of matt's baby it's on two at once [Applause] so we get two ready at once yeah that'll work pretty good okay so we're gonna try to leave a butt end on some of these so that it looks like a law a button pass log corner so these are called a butt and pass corner you cut this end off and then this one butts into it so you've got to cut these so they these two pieces can line up [Music] this logs uh 10 inches on a small end about 12 on the big end i'm just trying to balance it out and center it and make sure it cut it pretty close right down the middle is this one that we're going to leave the butt end on one of them or what's the scoop so i'm guessing the smart move would be to leave the butt end on the fat end of the log right you got a plan for that any words of wisdom [Laughter] he's asking me so that makes two of us that haven't done this part of the the job before yeah cause we talked about uh coming down into it the chainsaw and then dropping the blade in i think that's the plan yeah what if you just cut like up to a certain point and then we just took the chainsaw and just zipped that and then we peeled the two two pieces apart does that make sense oh two more i think we're there so then we're going to take this one cut both sides right yep and then do the same on these i i guess i think so i mean that's that's so look it if we cut both sides we're going to be losing a lot of the width of that log aren't we well this one's kind of a curvy one so yeah um she is on some of these it almost makes sense to uh pick and choose how we're gonna do it because we look down at if we cut if we start a straight line on one end it's gonna be it would be cutting this log right in half right so how how are we gonna make a straight that's not gonna they're not gonna be perfectly straight bonus yeah that's why we that's why we kill em dry our wood here that is why that is that's why you have two kilns now and the bonus bugs that we'll find on this oh man [Music] so okay this is much slicker than i thought matt yeah i do good work i just gotta position this the other way around we might have to juggle the logs around to get this out of the way of the saw head but but i think a zip right there yeah i didn't take off much huh that's perfect just need a little bit mm-hmm edge yep just so they are all lined up okay so we got the top edge cut oh god that's not even fair it rotates it for him oh what do you think i think we got ourselves log siding i don't know if we should cut the ends off though like this okay i don't know i don't know [Music] [Laughter] you tell me i'm here to cut i'm here to okay we're reversing our plans a little bit because we realize that we need them all to be the same width otherwise the siding is going to go like this right and so we can either have all sixes eights tens we're not going to make them all the same but we're going to make enough that when we put up a row of sixes we just grab out of the sixth pile and put up a row of eight to grab out of the eight pile go from there i hope that works so let's load these back up [Music] challenge that we're facing on this job is all of these logs have these different widths and at first we didn't catch this so we can't have one log be this wide and then the next log be this wide because you see these lines right here they just won't line up you can't get a straight line on the house but the logs that we have don't have enough consistency to make them all one did equal with what we're going to compromise with is we're going to make a batch all at 10 inches another batch all at 6 inches another batch all at 12 inches that way we can take all of the 12-inch logs and line them in a row then we can go the 10 then we can go the eight we can kind of stack them up according to size and i think that'll actually look pretty decent i hope i don't know i have no clue [Applause] [Music] don't hold that the wrong way when you go to do that other [Music] so [Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] god who's supposed to be bringing you logs because that guy's not keeping up with you no i've not had a single tree service bring me a log yet you actually went out and fetched all of these logs that are at your house yup oh god you got to run out of hours in the day what are they gonna do lift it up they're gonna lift your house up so you're gonna put a basement underneath it you're gonna do it and that's a lot of work all right so this will be our last piece we've got the trailer fall we've got a second load ready to go plus we've got character logs that we got to throw on so let's just watch this one cut and then we got to clean up we're not done working look at that so [Music] [Applause] yay for the day that's gonna say no more for the day i like cutting walnut a little bit more a little more interesting you get to discover things this is all the same [Music] yeah i'm guessing with every cut of walnut you get to stop and look with pine you just keep going sorry pine you're not as pretty right here no pleasure what's that strictly business no pleasure all right you guys well looks like a company called omega strap sent me some straps they want me to try out and show you guys so let's do let's just see what's see what's in here so it looks like they've added a knob onto their crank they've also added some safety catches on so that you can hold your strap in place without losing it so here's what i've got done so far after i wrap the strap up i ratchet it around let's add one more strap right in the middle i'm gonna jump in here and just say this is not sponsored only reason i'm showing you this is i like bringing you guys new things good bad and in between i like bringing you something and letting you guys figure out whether it's right for you or not there you go that has been omega strapped but i want to get a couple more on let's go help matt for a bit i normally am [Music] uh [Music] well all right you guys i think we've taken up enough of matt's time you guys are happen to be around the hastings area reuben custom sawmilling check them out matt rubin don't check them out too much though because i'm going to keep them plenty busy just with my stuff but he's already if you guys remember him i did a video with him last year his business has been growing it took off he actually did enough work in four months to compensate for his full-time job and he's just uh gonna be taking the leap full-time matt thanks brother yeah thank you it's better than when we started do you want these guys reaching out to you for anything or do you want them to not to sure go ahead why not reuben custom saw milling right yep and uh the point is i specialize in selling live edge slabs come see me if you need a project i'll take care of you or i'll have some stuff in the pipeline that'll help you out okay and i told these guys before i walked over to you just don't come see it too much because i got plenty of work for you yeah it's never ending all right that's our video for today god bless you guys go get em hope you enjoyed the ride i i had fun i had fun learning every time i watched that thing cut matt i was just like god it got really nice all day all day long does it not do that sometimes if you have a bad blade it might might throw you off but usually it's always running good how much does a set of blades cost 25 bucks a blade that's it yeah and i can resharpen about five times yeah i was gonna say yeah i know you can re-sharpen them yourself if you got the patience but i have an auto sharpener oh yeah set it and press go and then you're just done yep all right you guys that's it for today god bless you guys go get em we'll see on another one thanks matt yep
