After placing the pre-cut nosing in position, the installer makes new marks along the edges where the tread will meet the wall and the nosing. He uses a measuring tape to measure the dimensions, such as 5 inches on one side and 10 and 5/8 inches on the other, for the long board. To ensure a straight cut line between these two points, he applies diagonal tape and then marks the line with a pencil using a beam level as a guide. This method helps account for any irregularities in the wall or the staircase itself.
