Before starting the physical build, familiarize yourself with staircase terminology: 'stringers' are the timber pieces that run along either side of the steps, 'treads' are the individual steps that sit between the stringers, 'rise' refers to the vertical height between one tread and the next, and 'nosing' is the front edge of a tread. Gather all necessary tools and materials, including timber, a threaded rod, 100mm bugle screws, timber preservative, nuts and washers, a roofing square, a circular saw, and a router. Critically, before any construction begins, ensure you check local council regulations regarding stair size and height requirements, as a handrail might be mandatory above a certain height. Also, plan to build your stairs as close as possible to their final installation location, as they will be heavy once complete.
