Toilet Flapper Replacement

Locate the water supply valve, usually found on the wall behind the toilet base. Turn the handle clockwise until it is fully closed to shut off the water flow to the toilet tank.

Press the flush handle to allow water to drain from the tank into the toilet bowl. Hold the handle down for a few seconds to ensure as much water as possible is removed.

Use a sponge or a cup to soak up and remove any residual water left in the bottom of the toilet tank. This will prevent spillage during the flapper replacement.

Observe how the current flapper is attached to the flush valve. Note the chain length and how it connects to the flush lever arm.

Gently pull the old flapper away from the posts or ears on the flush valve seat. Then, unhook the chain connecting the flapper to the flush lever arm.

Align the new flapper over the flush valve opening and press down to secure it to the posts or ears on the valve seat. Ensure a snug fit.

Attach the chain of the new flapper to the hole or clip on the flush lever arm. Adjust the chain so it has minimal slack but is not taut when the flapper is seated.

Slowly turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to open it. Allow the toilet tank to fill with water.

Flush the toilet and observe if the water stops flowing into the bowl after the tank drains. Check for any leaks around the flapper and flush valve.
