Step 1: Count Your Steps (and Landings!)
5 minutesWalk your staircase and count every single step you plan on covering with a beautiful new tread. Don't forget to include any landings that you also want to protect and beautify. This simple count is crucial for ensuring you order the exact quantity needed, with no stress or last-minute surprises.

Step 2: Measure Tread Depth (Front to Back)
10 minutesUsing your tape measure, find the depth of your tread by measuring from the very front edge (the 'nose') straight back until you touch the riser (the vertical part of the stair). Record this measurement. This ensures your new tread will fit snugly, providing peace of mind with every step.

5 minutesWith your tape measure, find the full width of your staircase by measuring from the wall or banister on one side directly across to the other. This is the total available space you're working with and is key to determining the final width of your treads in the next step.

5 minutesConsider how much of your original wood you'd like to frame your new treads. This exposed wood is called the 'reveal.' A common choice is a reveal of ½ inch to 1 inch on each side, but the final decision is all about your personal style. This small detail makes a big impact, bringing warmth and elegance to your home.
