Stair Tread Installation

Be sure to let the wood dry completely; a dry surface is critical for proper adhesion.

To get that beautiful, seamless appearance, accurate measurements are key. Use a measuring tape to find the depth (from the front edge, or 'nosing,' to the back 'riser') and the width of a wooden stair. Transfer these measurements to the back of a carpet tread. Pro Tip: Marking the tread just slightly smaller than the stair itself ensures a clean fit without any buckling. If your treads have a pattern, double-check your alignment before marking.

Place your carpet tread on a flat, protected work surface. A sharp utility knife or heavy-duty scissors will give you the best results. For a perfectly straight edge with a utility knife, use a metal ruler as a guide and make several shallow passes—this gives you more control than trying to cut through all at once. Take your time here; this precision is what creates that polished, high-end look.

Take your first cut tread and position it on the stair, aligning it with the front nosing and ensuring it's centered. Once you're happy with the placement, peel back just 2-3 inches of the adhesive backing from the front edge. This technique gives you excellent control. Firmly press this exposed section down, starting your secure bond right where it counts.

Slowly continue to peel away the rest of the adhesive backing. As you go, use your hands to smooth the tread firmly onto the wood, working from the front edge toward the back. Pay special attention to the edges and corners to ensure a complete seal. For an even better bond, you can use a clean, dry cloth or a small roller to apply consistent pressure across the entire surface. This ensures the full adhesion that provides safety and durability.

You're in the home stretch! Following the same process from steps 2 through 5, you can now confidently complete your staircase. Remember to measure each stair individually, as slight variations can exist. Applying the same care to each step ensures a consistently beautiful and safe result for your entire family.

Once all 13 treads are installed, take a moment to admire your work! Now, perform a final quality check. Walk up and down the stairs, carefully inspecting each tread for any lifting edges or loose corners. Press down firmly on any areas that need it.
