Stair Riser Painting

Wipe down each stair riser with a damp cloth and a mild detergent solution. For stubborn spots, use a scrub brush. Rinse with clean water and allow the risers to dry completely before proceeding. This step is crucial for achieving a professional-looking finish.

Using fine-grit sandpaper (120-150 grit), lightly sand each stair riser. Focus on smoothing out any rough spots or imperfections. After sanding, wipe away all dust with a tack cloth or a slightly damp cloth. This prepares the surface for the primer.

Apply one or two coats of a good quality interior latex primer to the sanded and cleaned stair risers. Use a high-quality synthetic brush for cutting in edges and corners, and a small foam roller for the flat surfaces. Allow each coat to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before applying the next coat or paint.

Once the primer is completely dry, lightly sand the risers with very fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit or higher). This will knock down any subtle imperfections or raised grain. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.

Apply the first coat of high-quality white interior paint using the same brush and roller technique as with the primer. Ensure even coverage and avoid drips. Allow the first coat to dry completely according to the paint manufacturer's instructions before applying the second coat. For best results, allow ample drying time between coats.

If desired for extra durability in a high-traffic area, apply one or two thin coats of a clear water-based polyurethane or a durable acrylic sealer. Use a high-quality synthetic brush and apply evenly. Allow each coat to dry completely as per the product instructions before applying the next coat or allowing foot traffic.
