Stair Measurement Guide

Using a tape measure, extend the tape from the very front edge of the tread straight back to where it meets the riser. Record this measurement for each step. This measurement is crucial for determining the amount of material needed for treads, such as carpet or wood.

Place the tape measure against the front edge of the tread and extend it vertically down to the tread below. Record this measurement for each riser. Accurate riser height is important for consistent stair appearance and safety.

Extend the tape measure across the width of the stair tread, from one stringer (or wall) to the other. Record this measurement. If carpeting or installing a runner, this measurement is critical for determining the width of material needed.

Stand at the bottom of the staircase and measure the vertical distance from the finished floor to the finished floor of the level above. This measurement is important for projects involving newel posts, railing systems, or overall stair construction.

Measure the total horizontal length from the front edge of the first tread to the back of the last tread. This measurement is useful for understanding the overall footprint of the staircase.

Create a clear and organized document, such as a notebook or spreadsheet, to record all the measurements taken for tread depth, riser height, stair width, total height, and total run. Label each measurement clearly with the corresponding step number or location.
