Nest Thermostat Installation

Locate your home's main electrical panel and identify the breaker that controls your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Switch this breaker to the 'off' position to ensure there is no power running to the thermostat and HVAC unit during the installation process. This is a critical safety step to prevent electrical shock and damage to the equipment.

Gently pull the faceplate of your old thermostat away from the wall. Some thermostats may have screws or clips holding them in place. Once the faceplate is removed, you will see the wiring connected to the thermostat base. Take a clear picture of the existing wiring connections, noting which wire connects to which terminal. This picture will serve as a crucial reference for connecting the Nest thermostat correctly.

Using the labels provided with your Nest thermostat or small pieces of tape, label each wire according to the terminal it was connected to on the old thermostat (e.g., R, G, Y, W, C). If you don't have labels, you can use small pieces of tape and a pen. Ensure each label accurately corresponds to the terminal designation from your reference photo. This step is vital for ensuring proper communication between the Nest thermostat and your HVAC system.

Once all wires are labeled, carefully disconnect them from the terminals on the old thermostat base. Gently pull the wires through the wall opening. Then, unscrew the old thermostat's base plate from the wall. Allow the wires to gently retract into the wall cavity a short distance to prevent them from falling back completely.

If the area around the old thermostat has noticeable paint discoloration or holes, you can use the included Nest trim plate to create a cleaner look. Position the trim plate against the wall, aligning it with the existing wall opening. Feed the wires through the center opening of the trim plate.

Feed the labeled wires through the center opening of the Nest base (and trim plate, if used). Hold the Nest base against the wall, ensuring it is level. Use the included screws to secure the base to the wall. If mounting into drywall, use the provided wall anchors. Ensure the base is firmly attached and does not wobble.

Referencing the labels on your wires and the diagram in the Nest app or manual, insert each wire into its corresponding terminal on the Nest base. Press the terminal lever down to secure the wire. Ensure each wire is fully inserted and held firmly in place. If you have a 'C' wire, connect it to the 'C' terminal. If you do not have a 'C' wire, consult the Nest setup guide for alternative power solutions.

Align the Nest display unit with the base that is now mounted on the wall. Gently push the display onto the base until it clicks securely into place. You should hear or feel a distinct click, indicating it is properly seated.

Return to your home's electrical panel. Locate the breaker that controls your HVAC system and switch it back to the 'on' position. This will restore power to the Nest thermostat, and it should begin its startup sequence.

The Nest thermostat display should now light up and guide you through the initial setup process. This includes connecting to your Wi-Fi network, selecting your language, and configuring basic HVAC settings. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully. You may need to download the Google Home app on your smartphone to complete some steps.
