Grab a pencil and paper and do a quick tally of every single stair, including any landings you wish to protect. An accurate count is the foundation of a successful project, guaranteeing you have exactly what you need with no surprises. This is key for providing peace of mind.

For an accurate fit, measure the depth of each tread individually. Place your tape measure at the very front of the stair's edge—this is called the 'nosing'—and measure straight back to the vertical board, or 'riser'. It’s a common mistake to assume all stairs are identical, but in many homes, especially older ones, dimensions can vary. Measuring each one is part of the Oak Valley Difference, giving you that custom-made to fit result.

Measure the full width of your stair tread, from the wall to the balusters (spindles) or from one open side to the other. This is typically the longest dimension. Just like with depth, measure each stair individually to account for any slight variations and ensure a polished, professional look.

This is where your personal style comes in! The 'reveal' is the space of wood left visible on the sides of the tread. A common choice is a 1/2-inch to 1-inch reveal on each side, but it's entirely up to you. A great tip is to use painter's tape to mark out different widths on a few steps. This helps you visualize the final look before you order, ensuring you create a staircase where safety meets style.
